The fruitcultral sector is one of the main areas in which
Brazil is concentrating efforts to guarantee a better competitiveness.
In 2005, Brazil exported 827,6 thousand tonnes of fresh
fruit worth US$ 440 million, against US$119 million and
297 thousand tonnes in 1998.
Despite
a growth of 278% in volume and 370% in value, it is still
far from its true potential.
A
promotional programme has been created to help Brazil achieve
its true export potential. Since September 1998, the Brazilian
Fruit Institute (IBRAF) have been working along with the
Export Promotion Agency (APEX Brasil) to increase the competitiveness
of the Brazilian growers while demonstrating the attractiveness
of the foreign market.
The
statistics for Brazilian exports in 2005 (shown in the table
below) reflect the importance of these initiatives.
